Bilbao is een mooie stad in het noorden van Spanje en is de hoofdstad van de provincie Vizcaya (in het nederlands Biskaje), één van de drie provincies van Baskenland. Deze provincie grenst met Guipuzcoa in het oosten, Cantabria in het westen en Alava in het zuiden.
De stad Bilbao heeft zijn rijkdom in de geschiedenis verworven door de goedlopende industrie. Door deze industrie is de stad door de eeuwen heen behoorlijk gegroeid en heeft het tegenwoordig 400.000 inwoners. Als we daarbij de buitenwijken om de stad meetellen wonen er al snel een miljoen personen.
Bilbao is omgringd door bergen, met natuur en met een strook industrie. Door deze welvarende industrie is Bilbao jarenlang één van de rijkste steden van Spanje geweest. Door de stad loopt de rivier Ria de Bilbao die ook wel Nervion wordt genoemd.
De oorsprong van de stad vond plaats rond het jaar 1300 wanneer Diego Lopez de Haro Bilbao stichtte. Een jaar later bekrachtigde Koning Fernando IV dit en de stad kreeg stadsrecht.
In de laatste 30 jaar heeft Bilbao een grote verandering doorgemaakt. Van een industriele stad naar een gezellige stad met veel cultuur en uitgaans mogelijkheden. Vanaf de jaren 80 van de vorige eeuw werd de industrie steeds minder, en in de omgeving van de Ria de Bilbao, wat vroeger industriegebied was, is een cultureel en commercieel gebied geworden, met bijvoorbeeld het Guggenheim museum.
Ook zijn er de afgelopen jaren nieuwe groenstroken in de stad aangebracht, is het congres en cultureel centrum Palacio Euskalduna en de wolkenkrabbers Torres Isozaki Atea gebouwd.
Als u in Bilbao bent is een bezoek aan het oude centrum van de stad zeker de moeite waard. Hier is de geschiedenis goed bewaard gebleven.
De Semana Grande is een fantastische week in Bilbao met een gezellige sfeer, leuke concerten en vuurwerk, en we kunnen u ook aanraden naar voetbal wedstrijd te gaan van Athletic-Club Bilbao... De voetbalclub die een zeer belangrijke plaats inneemt in de stad.
Buiten dingen die er in de stad zelf te doen zijn is er ook veel te zien en te doen in de omgeving, oftewel in de provincie Vizcaya van Baskenland. Er is bijvoorbeeld het beroemde surf strand Mundaka, waar vele surfers uit de hele wereld naartoe komen, er zijn vele wandelroutes, u kunt paardrijden, fietsen etc etc...
Bovendien zult u in Bilbao of in de provincie geen problemen hebben met het vinden van geschikt accommodatie. Er zijn goede hotels, fijne appartementen en prachtig gelegen landelijke vakantiehuizen. Vooral het landelijke oftewel het rurale toerisme is sterk gegroeid de afgelopen jaren en er zijn vele mogelijkheden om tijdens uw vakantie in Spanje te genieten van de indrukwekkende natuur en toch dichtbij een stad als Bilbao te verblijven!
